During one of my many Google searches for satisfying low-calorie food items, I came across the famous shirataki noodles and thought, “Hey, why not give them a try?!”.

After reading some negative reviews online, I wasn’t absolutely certain I would like them, so I chose not to buy them in bulk – the way most websites sell them. Instead, I purchased four packages from www.AsianFoodGrocer.com at $2.28 each.

Please note these are yam shirataki noodles and not tofu shirataki noodles.

I just received them yesterday, and I must say, I think I’m in love. Not only do they have 0 calories, 0 carbohydrates, 0 fat, 0 everything, they absorb the taste of whatever you choose to add to them, and they are very satisfying – There’s a reason why they have become known as “miracle noodles”!

Some say eating shirataki noodles feels like chewing rubber bands, but I cannot say the same. Sure, they were a bit slimy (for lack of a better word) at first, but after a forkful or two I barely noticed the texture.

Others are repelled by the noodles’ “fishy” smell upon opening the package. Yes, they do smell like fish, but this is before they are rinsed a few times and cooked. I’ve found that if you rinse the noodles very well and cook them or fry them lightly, the smell disappears and they taste like nothing. So my advice to anyone thinking about trying them for the first time would be: Don’t inhale too deeply before the noodles are rinsed.

Like I said, they only arrived yesterday, but I’ve already had them for dinner last night and lunch and dinner today. I prepared them with a little bit of miso paste, veggies, and garlic – Delicious! I just won’t have them for lunch tomorrow because I’m meeting a friend for sushi…

I don’t know how they would taste when used as regular pasta, but I might try it in the near future.

Oh, and one last piece of advice: Shirataki noodles have no calories, which can be good, but please remember they also have no vitamins, nutrients, and everything else you need for a healthy diet. This can be particularly dangerous because they are so filling, so make sure you’re still getting everything you need from other sources.

Enjoy!
